Hi and welcome to the Somatic Coaching Academy podcast. Hi, Brian.
Brian
Hello, Ani.
Ani
Hi.
Brian
How are you?
Ani
I gotta tell you, I’m kind of tired.
Brian
Like, kind of tired.
Ani
We are so busy.
Brian
We got a lot going on now.
Ani
It’s exciting time. It’s one of those that—
Brian
yes, feel like we’re like Lots of things manifesting.
Ani
Yes. If you have not ordered your copy of Manifestation, or I should say pre-copied, pre-ordered your copy of Manifestation for Dummies, now’s your shot because the release date is—
Brian
what is it, July 7th?
Ani
Yep, it’s almost here. So if you want your pre-order order with your bonuses, go to mymanifestationguide.com. You can get your copy.
Brian
Yes, there you go. And today we are our topic is about manifestation. We thought we’d give you a little stuff to chew on before you get your book in the mail and you dig in there and you get to reading with that. So today we’re going to talk about the 3 reasons why somatics is the missing piece in manifestation and synchronicity.
Ani
You were singing a little song before we came on record. Are you gonna—
Brian
I was, but it’s copyrighted, so I can’t sing it. I can’t sing it out in public.
Ani
It’s Okay, you want to hop in?
Brian
Exactly. Yeah, it’s copyrighted.
Ani
Um, I am super convinced actually, uh, especially this past week, it just really landed for me. Like, the body has to be included in manifestation. I know we wrote the book and all of that stuff, but it’s really like lit a fire in me this week. It’s just, how has anybody ever talked about it without talking, like, really talking about the body before?
Brian
Yeah, so, so important for this book, for Manifestation for Dummies. One of the things that we really wanted to include were the embodiment practices, the body connections, the somatic parts of manifestation, how important it is.
Ani
Body-mind, mind-body holistic connection. Yeah.
Brian
So many other manifestation works, and there’s a lot of great ones out there, lean really heavily into the visualization side of things, into the what happens in your head space.
Ani
The intellectual space.
Brian
And they really let go or don’t even approach or address at all the power that is in your body to support manifestation projects.
Ani
So, Brian, because, you know, somatics is really pop— getting popular right now. It’s becoming this thing people are finding out about. But the people who are writing the books about manifestation, you know, weren’t somatic experts, so they didn’t know that, that slant, that piece. Yeah, um, right.
Brian
Yeah, yeah. And there’s so much stuff going on. Yeah, in the body. I mean, it’s, it’s an anchor of our experience.
Ani
It’s so powerful.
Brian
And so We wanted really this book to lean heavily into that aspect of things as well. There are a lot of kind of what you would think of as standardized practices and ideas and those kinds of things in the book, but it really brings in this missing piece of leveraging embodied practice, somatics, body-mind connection, how the nervous system works, how the subconscious mind processes and works with information, how we reprogram the subconscious through the body systems, all that kind of stuff is really what we wanted this book to really have a lot of great information about in it.
Ani
And it does. We really like the book. Like, as we’ve been reading it, we got a preorder, of course, a pre-copy, and it’s just so great. I’m really appreciating it so much. It was meant to be a very practical book, and I think having the body be a part of it actually makes it more practical because you can really feel stuff working when you try it.
Brian
Yeah, yeah.
Ani
And I’ve read parts of the book and been like, that’s a really good idea.
Brian
And you’re like, oh wait, we, we wrote that, you know, kind of thing. Or at least it came through us sort of thing. And then you’re reading it again. Anyway, let’s pop into the topic today about these 3 reasons why, and these are just 3 reasons why. There are more than these 3 reasons, but these are the 3 reasons we want to talk about today with you.
Ani
All right. What do you got?
Brian
What’s the first reason? And this is just a really foundational reason. And a lot of this is one of the reasons that Ani and I talk about a lot. To each other during the day. This is the reason we talk about a lot on other people’s podcasts, um, around this, that the first thing that really— the, the basic foundational thing is that in order to manifest anything new at all, you need to be able to regulate your nervous system and move from that sympathetic dominant state of fight and flight, where you just keep getting the same results again and again and again. You have to be able to shift your nervous system from sympathetic dominance in towards parasympathetic dominance. Not too far though, because too much parasympathetic—
Ani
Make you go to sleep. Yeah.
Brian
No better than too much sympathetic, which wake you up. You need to be balanced, right? We need to move towards a balanced autonomic nervous system. And it’s critical to do that if you want to create something new.
Ani
That’s the key word, is new, because we’re manifesting all the time. But the, the thing is, we’re continually manifesting what we usually get. So manifestation is this thing people are like, I need to learn how to manifest. Guess what? You’re already manifesting. But we, we’re recycling what we always get. So if you want to get something new Yeah, you gotta regulate your nervous system.
Brian
Have to be able to regulate your nervous system. And the reason for that is, is because sympathetic dominance, which most people are in most of the time, because we’ve done lots of podcasts in the past about this, but just the technology puts us into a sympathetic dominant state with all of the bings and the bangs and the bongs. Yeah, and the dopamine hits and all the things, right? Keeps activating sympathetic responses within us. You know, the other thing that happens too is so much communication is in digital form nowadays and not in face-to-face or even voice form that like texting and email and even comments on social media, there’s no recognition of the emotional component behind the communication. So when you’re reading something in just in text form without getting cues from another human about how they are actually intending that information to come across, what we do is we tend— people will tend to, again, because we are protectivity biased, humans will tend to make it threatening. Well, even if it’s not implied or meant to be threatening by the person texting, we tend to make it threatening.
Ani
That’s a really good point. I think that’s so interesting. Yeah, there’s so— when’s the last time you talked on the phone? Oh gosh, you know what I mean?
Brian
Like, in a meaningful way to someone? All the time.
Ani
Phone to people, but we don’t. You’re right, it’s texting, it’s communicating on social media, it’s reading emails. Wow. And yeah, without those social cues, um, yeah, we see it as threatening.
Brian
Yeah, so we’ll automatically see it as threatening, which puts us into that sympathetic state. So how many times a day are you reading texts? Like, Hundreds, hundreds of times a day you are looking at texts and emails and social media comments, hundreds of times a day. And every time you’re looking at one, you are actually scanning it for threat. You’re actually making it threatening and then using energy to try to work process through whether it’s actually threatening or not. So it’s exhausting to do that.
Ani
Yeah, that’s interesting. You approach it as a threat and then scan it to, to make sure it’s okay.
Brian
Yeah, so that’s exhausting. And all of that energy that we’re, we’re wasting, quite frankly, wonder why on that process, wonder why we’re stressed. But manifestation requires energy. Like, manifesting something new in your life requires some energy. What doesn’t require much energy is keeping everything the same. What does require energy is having the same old problems show up again and again and again and again and again and again on autopilot.
Ani
Which is great for the body and the nervous system because it likes to conserve energy. But we’re like, we are spending energy. We are leaking energy all over the place.
Brian
All the time. And that energy we’re leaking could be used to manifest and create something new in your life. And so most people think when they talk about the topic of manifestation, the assumption they make is, I want to manifest something better than I have right now, or different than I have right now, more, um, desirable than I have right now, baked into that idea. So if, if you can’t regulate your nervous system, or if your nervous system is not regulated, it’s, it’s really practically impossible to do that. And not just from an energy standpoint, it’s actually also from a, a wiring standpoint in your brain and in your nervous system. Because when you’re In that sympathetic dominance, the wiring specifically activates— the neural networks specifically activate, again, to either fight or run away, to, um, to be in action somehow. And it cuts off other circuits that are associated with creativity. And creativity is, again, creating something new. So that’s the first reason why somatics is just absolutely critical in creating or manifesting something new in your life, is because somatics are a very powerful and effective and efficient way to balance your autonomic nervous system.
Ani
We find most people have no idea how stressed out they are. So you might say to yourself, well, my nervous system’s regulated. Well, check it. Mm-hmm. Go take some Core Centering classes and then see what you think. I have a, a client who just took a month off and she got out of the one month and was like, I’m burned out. I had no idea. Mm.
Brian
But that’s what happens. She recognized that when she had time off, right? How burned out she was.
Ani
Yeah. And that’s what she said 2 weeks out, 2 weeks out. Recognize I’ve been burned out. That’s how it goes, because we’re so used to just keeping going, we don’t recognize how stressed out we are.
Brian
Exactly, exactly. So that’s the first reason.
Ani
Now, or dysregulated—
Brian
dysregulated we are. The first reason— this leads kind of into the second reason. So the second reason why somatics is critical for manifestation is because manifestation is about reprogramming your subconscious mind and patterns. The reason we keep getting the same thing again and again and again is because you have a subconscious pattern to keep getting the same thing again and again and again and again and again. And the way to get something different is you have to reprogram or re-pattern your subconscious mind and subconscious processing systems.
Ani
Okay, well, obviously the body’s part of that because the subconscious is all the body stuff. It’s all the body systems.
Brian
It’s all the body systems, right? Subconscious is running all of your body systems.
Ani
Now, that’s just— it’s an interesting conversation because sometimes we do talks and we think people kind of understand where we’re going with things, but they still— they— the way that, because of the body-mind split, the way people perceive when you talk about mind, immediately most people think that you’re talking about brain function. So even the subconscious mind, people picture as a brain thing. Yeah, and it’s not that it’s not a brain thing, but it’s a whole body system. Exactly. Brain is a part of—
Brian
well, the interesting thing is I think when most people think of the brain, they think of the cortex of the brain, right? Like our higher brain centers, the parts of our brains where we plan, organize, make meaning, create rationalizations around— like those higher frontal lobes, parietal lobes, temporal lobes, except like the, the higher kind of brain centers. I think when people think brain, that’s what they kind of think about. But the subconscious mind, uh, centers are not primarily in the higher cortex. They are located in the limbic system, which is like deeper in the brain, and also in the brain stem. And so the brain stem runs all of your autonomic functions, like your heart rate, and your breathing and your digestion and those sorts of things. And so those are kind of the subconscious hubs of the brain, but those parts of the brain have direct neural connections to the body, right?
Ani
Just thinking about how the brainstem does not have a good marketing department.
Brian
It does not. Brainstem doesn’t— it does not have a good marketing department at all.
Ani
For everyone, like, no one was talking about milk, and then milk became like the thing, or Where’s the beef everybody was talking about, right? Like the brainstem has no marketing department. No one’s talking about the brainstem.
Brian
Or looking kindly upon it, by the way. It’s just the brainstem.
Ani
That with the limbic system too. Oh, the limbic system. Oh, nobody wants that.
Brian
That’s your emotional system. You gotta be able to control your limbic system.
Ani
Exactly. Get that under control. Ugh.
Brian
Yeah, both those parts of the brain, right? They get kind of a bad rap, but they’re the parts of the brain that are controlling your experience most of the time, right?
Ani
So that’s the way.
Brian
So these centers are directly correlated with your body, and these are the subconscious centers that are filtering the information that your higher cortex receives. Get this, people, the, the smarty pants part of your brain is being fed information by the primitive part of your brain, right? The smarty pants is being fed information from the Neanderthal part of your brain and then validating it.
Ani
Yeah, the smarty part, part of the brain is like, no, I’m not, like, right? Like, it doesn’t not want to acknowledge that.
Brian
Yeah, but it is, because think about this: your smarty pants part of your brain knows. It knows that things like smoking and drinking and eating processed foods and taking drugs and sitting on the couch and overworking. Like, the smarty part of your brain knows all that stuff is bad for you.
Ani
It doesn’t—
Brian
but you keep doing it. Yeah, why? And you keep doing it, and then you make up reasons why you need to keep doing it. And so you’re using the most powerful— you know, like, what we think is the most powerful part of our brains, our cortex, to basically validate the Neanderthal part of our brains operating system, right? Preach. So it’s just— and yeah, anyway, so just kind of think about it like that. And so the thing is, it’s like your limbic system, your brainstem, the information coming from your body is going to tell your higher brain centers what to focus on, okay? And that’s called value tagging. If you want more information on value tagging, we did a whole episode about it. It’s, it’s episode 98. 8 in our podcast is called Connecting the Dots Between Somatic Coaching and Manifestation.
Ani
Didn’t you talk about value tagging in the, um, the bonus that we have for the book too?
Brian
I did.
Ani
All right, so if you don’t have it yet, if you’re getting the book or you got the book, Brian wrote this awesome guide. It’s called 10x Your Manifestation Power. Is it part of your bonuses? And talks the science in the The 10x bonus. Yeah, really, really fascinating.
Brian
Yeah, very cool, very cool. So if you want to 10x your manifestation power by learning to feel it in your body first before it shows up, that’s what that—
Ani
yeah, read that PDF.
Brian
Yeah, it’s really value tagging, really great. So you can learn more about value tagging in that podcast, but it’s even deeper in this, um, in this supplemental, uh, PDF that we created.
Ani
Fascinating topic.
Brian
Okay, and so the way that you reprogram what your higher cortex is paying attention to is you have to reprogram in the subconscious because your subconscious is feeding your conscious mind information about what to focus on.
Ani
It is running the show.
Brian
It’s running the show. And if you want to create something new, then you need to pay attention to something different than you are right now. Pretty straightforward.
Ani
Yeah. What does this have to do with why the body’s so important, Brian?
Brian
Well, so that’s the— well, because the information is being fed from your interoceptive system, your sensory system, from your body is what’s feeding upward into the subconscious, and that information is then being fed your cortex about what to pay attention to.
Ani
Just wanted to bring it back to that because we’ve been saying brainstem and, um, limbic system a bunch. So yeah, so all of that information is coming up the system into the brainstem.
Brian
Yes, exactly, exactly. Now the third reason, the third reason why somatics is the missing piece in manifestation and synchronicity—
Ani
can I guess?
Brian
You can guess.
Ani
Is because everybody forgets to talk about it. So that’s why it’s the missing—
Brian
that’s why it’s the missing piece. No one ever forgets to talk about this part. Now, so manifestation in its, in its modern, in its modern sense, when people think about manifestation, how do they think about it? They think about visualizing something they want, or— and it goes poof, and it goes poof, and it appears, right? Something just magically kind of happens. And sometimes you’re visualizing it and then you run into just like exactly the person you needed to talk to, or you, uh, discover the exact book that you needed to read, or the exact podcast you needed to hear landed in your inbox. And it was kind of like you didn’t plan it that way, it just kind of happened. And so that’s what we call synchronicity. So modern manifestation is includes some degree of synchronicity, right? In which the opportunities for growth just seem to appear spontaneously out of nowhere.
Ani
So sometimes people talk about synchronicity in— I agree with you how you’re talking about it, by the way. Sometimes people talk about it more in terms of the poofness, the magic kind of thing, like as if synchronicity is when the check lands in the mailbox. Synchronicities when the— I don’t know, the new car that you want just appears in your driveway. Like, so some people kind of talk about it like that, but that’s not exactly what you’re saying.
Brian
No, I’m saying that synchronicity— well, we have a definition here. Oh, we have to have a definition, silly me, because here we are. But of course, I don’t think I’ve done a definition in several episodes, by the way. Just— I could have done one in the last episode. I don’t remember.
Ani
It’s been paining me.
Brian
But here we go.
Ani
So I’ve been thinking about it.
Brian
Let’s look at Merriam-Webster’s definition definition of synchronicity, just so we’re all on the same page.
Ani
At your funeral, I’m going to read something.
Brian
Read a definition.
Ani
Okay.
Brian
Yeah, death is the— read the definition of death on my— at my funeral. Thank you for coming. So yeah, that sounds good. I’m down with that.
Ani
I know you would.
Brian
Okay, so here we go. So synchronicity is the coincidental occurrence of events that appear meaningfully related, yet lack any direct causal connection. Now, this term— I didn’t realize this— that this term was actually coined by Carl Jung. Oh, it was?
Ani
I think maybe I did know that.
Brian
Yeah, and it describes, uh, striking instances where a subjective mental state, like a thought or a dream, perfectly mirrors an external reality which holds profound personal significance.
Ani
Significance.
Brian
So here’s the thing. So according to the definition of synchronicity, and it’s, uh, who coined it, Carl Jung, the famous psychologist, is, is a synchronicity includes two things: an acausal connection. In other words, it doesn’t seem like they were directly cause and effect with one another, plus, which is why it seems like it came out of nowhere.
Ani
Exactly.
Brian
Plus subjective meaning of the connection. Meaning making. Exactly. So you could see an acausal connection, but if, if it’s not meaningful to you in some way, then it’s not synchronicity.
Ani
It’s why it causes us to capture our attention, correct?
Brian
Because we’re making meaning of it. We’re recognizing it as, oh, that happened. Oh my God, that happened. They are connected somehow. Here’s the meaning for it, right? But without both of those components is not a synchronicity. Like, an acausal connection without a subjective meaning is not a synchronicity. Something with, uh, even intense objective meaning but there’s not an acausal connection is not a synchronicity. Has to have those two parts.
Ani
Sure.
Brian
Okay, so synchronicity is a part of manifestation. We actually talk about synchronicity a fair amount in the book as well. We go pretty— we go pretty deep into understanding, like, the mechanics of it, why it happens, those sorts of things.
Ani
Yeah, and you can get better at it too.
Brian
Yeah. Now, in a previous podcast, I don’t have the episode number at my fingertips here, but we did an episode on the 3 levels of manifestation, if you remember, and they are the physical level, um, the sensory-emotional level, and the level of spontaneous flow. All right. Now, synchronicity, synchronicity happens when the level of spontaneous flow manifestation interacts, collides with the physical level of manifestation, right? That’s what a synchronicity is. It’s like the— we’re in flow. The mechanics of the universe are working together in ways that we can’t see. There’s these acausal relationships going on that we’re not aware of, but they happen to collide in a meaningful way in, in our physical reality. And then we say Maybe we say there’s a synchronicity, right? Because you might not recognize that as synchronicity either. You might not recognize it, especially if you’re super stressed out or dysregulated. Exactly right. Because the link—
Ani
here’s the thing—
Brian
the link between the physical level and the spontaneous flow level is the what?
Ani
Sensory-emotional.
Brian
The sensory-emotional level. That’s the link between the physical and the spontaneous flow levels. So here’s the scoop: in order to recognize a synchronicity as a synchronicity, it must have a felt quality.
Ani
Oh, that’s cool. Yes, I like that, because it’s got to be significant, right? Because it’s what you feel that makes it real, Brian.
Brian
That’s what you feel that makes it real. You must— in order to say that’s a synchronicity, it would not be meaningful. It would not be meaningful if you didn’t feel something in your body.
Ani
Okay, so when you experience a synchronicity, just kind of a general one, what does that feel like to you?
Brian
So for me, it feels like a, a kind of like fireworks in my chest, or my— like, ooh, like kind of thing happens. Like, it feels like, whoa, like that sort of thing.
Ani
People say they get chills.
Brian
Yeah, or goosebumps.
Ani
A little bit about when people say they get chills or goosebumps.
Brian
Yeah, chills or goosebumps. That kind of stuff.
Ani
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Brian
Which is also a, uh, you know, it’s actually a sympathetic reaction to have chills and goosebumps, but you’re activating your autonomic nervous system because you feel something in the body. It’s meaningful in a certain way, right? So this is why, again, somatic— somatics are so critical to manifestation.
Ani
I want to go— so when it happens to me, it feels like a kind of like catching my breath like a, ’cause it causes me to go, like, it’s not that I catch my breath, but that feeling of like, is like this pause moment in my system that goes, wait a minute, like that thing, that thing and that thing. That’s what it feels like to me, it’s that catching my breath.
Brian
Yeah, interesting. Any other sensations that go along with that catching your breath?
Ani
Listeners, I wanna know what it feels like to you. Let us know in comments. Give us a comment. What it feels like when you have a synchronistic moment. What does it feel like? Right, what’d I say?
Brian
Yeah, I think that’s what you said.
Ani
Yeah, what does it feel like?
Brian
I’m just repeating it.
Ani
Okay, um, yeah, um, because I’m super interested about everybody’s experience because we all experience these things differently, which is so awesome. Um, what’d you say?
Brian
Well, I was just going to say that it’s interesting because just, uh, yesterday I was in an engagement session with our Level 2 Somatic Transformation Fundamentals students, and they were reporting on their case studies and things that were coming up in their case studies. They were saying, oh my God, I never realized how hard it is for so many people actually to feel into their bodies.
Ani
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Brian
And it was like many of their, many of their test cases had difficulty feeling into their bodies. They’re like asking, well, where do you feel something? What do you mean? Like, well, what does it feel like? Well, it feels like, it feels like pain. Well, tell me what that feels like. Well, I don’t know. It feels like it hurts. And so it took a while to get people to actually develop like that sense of what we call interoceptive literacy, right?
Ani
So what if synchronicities are happening all the time but you’re not aware of them because your body awareness just isn’t really very—
Brian
that’s exactly where we’re going with this conversation.
Ani
So even if you just developed your body awareness, maybe you’d have more synchronicities in your life.
Brian
That’s it, right? And that’s why somatics is so important, because if you, if you don’t have, um, good body awareness You might see something with your eyes, you may hear something with your ears, but it won’t register as a synchronicity because there’s no felt quality for it, right? By definition, it needs to have subjective meaning, right? Needs to have a felt quality, something that feels deeply personal and symbolic in some way. Yeah, that’s a part of the definition. Yeah. So you don’t feel deeply symbolic between your ears. You feel that as a felt quality sense in your body. I’m not saying there’s not anything that happens between your ears, but, but it’s a, a holistic experience to be in, um, recognition of a synchronicity. And to Ani’s brilliant point, I just recognized you were making the point.
Ani
I just recognized it.
Brian
So Ani’s summation is basically saying, what if, like, if you just had a better felt quality sense in your body, imagine all of the synchronicities that you are not seeing right now.
Ani
This reminds me of when we teach people their soul’s agenda here. When people find their soul’s agenda, for some people it just wakes them up in like a way that when you walk in a room, you turn on a light switch and then you can see things that you couldn’t see before because it was dark and nobody turned on the light switch. I mean, so many people are walking around having this kind of— actually, I talked to somebody today, she’s like, every day is just like the last day and tomorrow is gonna be just like today. Every day is the same with a relative amount of numbness and monotony, right? In the body all the time. And then people find their Soul’s Agenda and it’s like this turn on a light switch kind of thing. And then they start seeing things, right? It’s not that they weren’t there, it’s just they couldn’t feel anything.
Brian
That’s it. It’s not that they weren’t there. There actually, there’s so much stuff happening around you all of the time. How many clients have we worked with, Ani, that are in some type of conscious change process, AKA manifestation process, and they come to a session or they come to a class and they tell us a bunch of stuff that happened and we’re like, there it is. Like, there’s the synchronicity. Like, what are you talking about? Like, you don’t see like those two things right there? Like, it’s right there. And they’re like, I don’t, I’m not seeing it. I’m not, I’m like, it’s right there. Like, there are synchronicities when, as soon as you plan a manifestation journey for yourself and you get your intention lined up and you start to move forward, synchronicities will almost immediately start happening. If you’re not seeing them, it’s not because they’re not happening, it’s because you’re not recognizing them as being there. And your body is critical in recognizing them.
Ani
Gotta feel it.
Brian
Yeah, gotta feel it, because what you feel that makes it real. So those are the 3 reasons that we’re talking about today. There are a lot more in the book, um, why somatics is the missing piece in manifestation and synchronicity. You have to balance your autonomic nervous system. You need to be able to re-pattern and shift what’s happening in your subconscious mind. And for gosh darn sakes, you got to recognize the synchronicities that are bringing you closer to creating ultimately what it is that you want to have in your life.
Ani
I love it. I’m ready to go start recognizing synchronicities right now. We want to hear about your synchronicities too, so you can tell us about that in the comments. And, uh, if you didn’t get your book, go ahead and get your book, mymanifestationguide.com. And, uh, we can’t wait for you to read it. Yep.
Brian
And if anybody you know needs to hear this episode, make sure you share it with them. Like, comment, all that kind of stuff. And we’ll see you again next week on the podcast.
Ani
Bye-bye.
